On Sunday 3 March the Bay and Basin Nippers Community club participated in the great initiative known across the country as Clean Up Australia day. Since its beginnings in 1990 the Clean Up Australia day is an opportunity for people in the community to come together and make a difference in their local environment. It was an idea that came about when Ian Kiernan, a sailor, had observed excess litter and plastics in the ocean on his travels. Its one day to make a difference and one day to remind people that they can make a difference. Since 1990 over 38.5 million hours have been donated to Clean Up activities. These include those of the Bay and Basin Nippers who have participated for the past X years, as it aligns with their ethos, to build a sense of belonging and camaraderie while learning ocean education.
It was wonderful to see that the Bay is kept relatively clean from rubbish, the Nippers really had to look hard as they spread out around Plantation Point in search to find litter. The exercise is a great reminder that – every little bit counts- when everyone came together with the little that they had found, it was indeed a significant collection that was rescued from the environment.
It was all counted and tallied and uploaded back to the organisers who maintain data. Items included 5 take away coffee cups, 13 plastic food wrappers, 7 cans of drink, 4 plastic drink bottles, 2 glass bottles, 5 cigarette butts, 6 balloons, 1 sandal and many other random bits. It’s a reminder that we can use our keep cups for coffee, refill our own drink bottles and to always pick up after ourselves. Leaving nothing but footprints.
